If you’re visiting London as a potential student transfer, or you’re planning on moving to the capital for your education, then you’re in for an exciting ride. London is a vast and diverse location with plenty of things to do and see. Countless people fall in love with London when they visit, and you might even find it hard to go back home once you’ve got your degree.

Of course, as exciting as it is to set up a life in London as a student, it’s worth noting that there are some challenges to consider too. If you haven’t lived in London before, and you don’t have many experiences with the capital, then it can be like getting used to a completely different world. Here are some quick tips to help you survive student life.

    1. Get a Student ID

Get a student ID as early as you can when you go to London. Ultimately, the capital city is quite an expensive place to live and learn. When you’re a student with limited money to spend, you’re going to have an even harder time making ends meet. A student ID will make it much easier to keep costs low, because you’ll be able to get discounts on everything from travel to food.

Many of the shops, clubs and restaurants in London have a student discount to offer. Most of the places you can visit will take your ID card from your university as evidence that you’re a student, but you can also purchase a Student card online that may give you access to some additional discounts and help you wouldn’t find on your own.

    2. Learn How to Get Around

If you’re new to London, you’re going to need to learn how to get around. Driving isn’t really an option for most people in London, because it’s so confusing figuring out how to get from one place to another. Plus, it’s difficult to find enough money for a car and a place to live when you’re a student. With that in mind, it’s best to invest in an Oyster card.

An Oyster card in London will give you access to various public transportation options, including the underground, various bus routes, and the overground routes too. Make sure you find out exactly where you can go with your Oyster card before you begin flashing it on every form of student transport however. Explore the busses and routes before your term starts so you feel confident when rushing between classes and part-time job roles.

    3. Take Advantage of Apps

Finally, it pays to be a well-connected person when you’re living as a student in London these days. We’ve already mentioned that there are tons of discounts around for students, but you can find even more ways to save money by signing up to certain apps. The Unidays app will give you discounts on various forms of food and clothes. The Viber app allows you to connect with your loved ones without paying anything, or you can stick to WhatsApp.

For getting around, make sure you have City Mapper downloaded, as this will help you to track the most efficient and affordable routes. It’s also worth having a ride-sharing app like Uber handy where you can check out people willing to help you get wherever you need to be without the stress of high prices. Aside from these must-haves, you should also look into apps and tools that allow you to find things like discount meals and groceries in your area. Type London into your app store for more insights on the best tools for you right now.
