There are few locations in the world more hallowed to Harry Potter fans than London. The place where the greatest battles in wizard history took place, London is a go-to destination for all would-be witches and wizards of any age. If you’re visiting London and you love Harry Potter, then it only makes sense to check out some of the great events you can take part in whilst exploring the capital.
London is absolutely packed full of things for Harry Potter fans to enjoy, including themed afternoon teas and cocktail sessions where you can learn to make your own potions. There’s also places to go if you want to enjoy some Harry Potter themed food. Here are our top things to do as a HP lover in London.
1. Visit Platform 9 ¾
London has fully embraced its title as the home of Harry Potter, to the point where they’ve even installed a new platform at King’s Cross Station. Just venture over to the entrance between platforms 9 to 11 and you’ll find a cart disappearing through the wall at a Platform 9 ¾ sign.
This is a popular photo spot for visitors, and you can wear your chosen house colours while grabbing your photo to make you really feel like you’re in the book. Make sure you come early in the morning if you want to snap a shot, otherwise you can expect some long lines. There’s also a store next to the platform where you can stock up on themed goodies.
2. Visit Diagon Alley
Head to Charing Cross Road and you’ll walk down the very same street where Harry looked for all the items on his Hogwarts list when shopping at Diagon Alley. This is the official street where Harry got Hedwig as a gift from Hagrid and found his first wand.
The street is currently lined with antique shops and bookstores. Although you won’t find any actual locations to buy your own owl here, you’ll still have a wonderful time seeing the route in person.
3. Visit Number 12 Grimmauld Place
A short distance away from Kings Cross and the famous platform is the safe house for the Potter crew in the Order of the Phoenix. The home, number 12 Grimmauld Place is an unsuspecting property located between 23-29 Claremont Square.
This is another great place to visit for pictures if you want to show that you’ve also been to some of the major locations in the Potter movie franchise.
4. Get some Unique Gifts
If you’re looking for Harry Potter Merchandise, there’s plenty of places to go for that, including the themed gift shops at the Warner Bro’s studio tour. One of the best places in our book has to be the House of Minalima in Soho, however. The shop is an artistic expression of all things Harry Potter, and it’s rarely as crowded as some of the other London attractions.
This shop belongs to the graphic design team responsible for much of the visual design in the Harry Potter world, and there are tons of amazing things for sale inside.
5. Visit the Warner Brothers’ Studios
For the ultimate Harry Potter London experience, it’s definitely worth buying tickets to the Harry Potter Warner Bros’ Studio tour. It’s important to buy tickets in advance for this, as you can often save some serious cash. While visiting the studio, you’ll be able to explore some official film sets from the movies, see original costumes, check out art designs, and even watch creature effects behind made. You can even grab a butterbeer when you’re done.
If you’re going to visit the studios during the winter, it’s definitely worth going for a themed trip, where you’ll see the studio made up for the season.
